Summary: Simon (James McAvoy) is an ordinary man living out his daily life until one day he finds himself at the wrong place at the wrong time. Quickly, things get out of control when he is accused of a murder he did not commit. When he tries to prove his innocence, he is instead institutionalized as a schizophrenic.
Assigned to the case is a hypnotherapist by the name of Dr. Lester (Michael Fassbender), who is there to examine Simon’s condition. Although he has never met Simon, Lester can’t help but feel haunted by a sense of Déjà vu upon meeting him. During his time with Simon, Lester puts him under a deep hypnotic states so that he can induce Simon’s mind to become a ‘better person’. What he finds, however, is far from what he expects.
+Spoiler - Simon is a reincarnation of both Wesley Gibson and Charles Xavier, both of whom are brought back in full force after Lester manages to shatter the barriers within his mind. It causes Simon to have two more different personalities, each one breaking and entering through his consciousness with each session. The reappearance of ‘Charles’ triggers Lester’s mind to bring back his own former self, Erik Lehnsherr to the surface as well.
However, the stress of having two different entities in his mind drives Simon insane, causing him to go after Lester/Erik. The problem is, while Wesley is only too eager to help in Simon’s endeavor, Charles has unfinished business with Erik that involves keeping him alive indefinitely.
"A memory is locked in a cage. And with enough force… the lock can be broken."
"On the count of three, you will wake up-"
Lester looks down at Simon’s body in surprise, not expecting to be interrupted. He met the man’s ocean blue eyes, wide awake and filled with shock and… pain? sadness? Lester frowned in confusion.
"No." Upon hearing those words, Simon stared at him with intensity, as if he were listening for something that Lester could not hear.
Lester found now that Simon’s voice trembled when he spoke, the intonation in his voice dropping to the sound of someone who had discovered a devastating revelation. In spite of himself, his curiosity got the better of him.
Give it 5 more minutes, then wake him up. Lester thought to himself.
”I’m sorry, I thought you were someone I once knew. I can see I was mistaken.”
Lester smiles. “Not to worry. Tell me… when you meant you saw something, what did you mean by that?”
"It means I am merely a memory now. But somehow fate has managed to interfere once more." Simon’s looked at him gravely.
Lester cocked his head to one side in response, his eyebrows furrowing. He turned his back for a moment to look out the window.
“We make our own future, Simon. And you’ll have to own up to what you’ve done eventually.”
"You sound very sure of yourself, Doctor."
An unfamiliar voice answered him back and Lester turned, feeling a chill pass through him. His eyes widened as he now stared at Simon… but the posture in which he stood and the way he was looking at him did not give him the impression that this was Simon anymore.
"Simon hasn’t done anything, y’know." Lester could now tell the slight American accent that rolled off of Simon’s tongue, differentiating between the previous ‘entity’ that had spoken to him earlier.
"And how would you know?"
A smile slowly crept up Simon’s lips. “He’s never held a gun in his life. But I have.”
Without warning, Lester found Simon’s hands grabbing him and pushing him to the wall. “Charles is weak. He’s never going to be able to kill you, what with you and him having a broken relationship and everything. I, on the other hand, knows what it takes to make sacrifices on behalf of humanity’s safety.”
Lester quickly felt panic boil up inside of him as he struggled, only to be slammed harder to the wall. He started to speak the words that would break the trance but a hand clamped over his mouth, muffling his voice.
"You’re the murderer, Erik. And hiding under this sheep skin won’t help you anymore. I’m not letting Charles wake you up. I’m going to stop history from repeating itself, even if it means-"
One resonant snap of the fingers echoed through the white room. The voice stopped speaking mid-sentence. The iron grip behind Lester was released.
The doctor turned to look back at his patient and found Simon blinking dazedly, his hands trembling. He met Lester’s eyes, now wide in horror. “What… happened?”
"You’ve woken up."
