The trailer for Looper caught my eye a few months ago, an original Hollywood sci-fi film is almost unheard of these days. Last night I finally saw it and it’s left me with some slightly mixed feelings.
Let me start by saying Looper is a great film, Rian Johnsons’ direction is spot on and in some places genuinely amazing. My favourite aspect of this film was it’s setting, the dystopian world that is 2044 it’s close enough to resemble modern day but the world has advanced in a believable way.
The cast were also superb, Joseph Gordon-Levitt doesn’t ordinarily remind me of Bruce Willis but the combination of prosthetics, CGI and Levitt’s acting you can readily believe that they are the same person. One of the issues I have with Looper is the lack of female characters, there are only three female roles and two are mothers and one is a wife, there aren’t really any individuals. Although Emily Blunt plays the troubled mother character convincingly it felt like they could have done more with her.
The other problem that I had with Looper was it’s second half. After introducing the idea of Loopers and the crime and danger that surrounds the whole business, that side of the story falls away. Instead it goes to down the special powers route with “TK” (telekinesis) and from there the story just isnt as exciting. It’s not bad at all it just lacks the same creativity that the first half has.
The ending was in my opinion fine, I liked it but some of my friends were less satisfied saying that it didn’t make sense or didn’t give enough explanation as to what the actual outcome for the future was. Looper definitely has its flaws but it’s still one of the most inventive films i’ve seen this year, I’d definitely recommend a watch. 3.5/5

This new Looper Animation is very, very special.
Zach Johnson (who did these painted posters) worked with Noah Fisher to create a gorgeous animation, by hand painting over 700 frames. The gif above is pulled from it, but you need to see the whole thing. I want every single one of them on my wall. Check it out over at Apple Trailers.
